1) This is a Spanish Galleon (or ship). It is what the explored traveled to Florida on. These vessels were used for war, commerce, and exploration. The large sails gave the galleon power. Cargo was stored in the hull. Many of these ships were armed with cannons.
2) This rock is called coquina. It is a sedimentary rock, and is in the limestone family. The first explores of Florida used it to built forts. The Castillo De San Marcos in Saint Augustine is made out of coquina. Because of coquina's softness, cannon balls would sink into, rather than shatter or puncture, the walls of the Castillo De San Marcos.
3) Fools gold represents the intentions and misfortunes of the Spanish and French explorers. The explorers thought that they would find gold, pearls, precious minerals, and fertile land Florida. Unfortunately for the explorers, Florida didn’t have many of these natural resources.
4) Unfortunately, the first explorers and settlers of Florida faced many hardships. One of them unexpected problems was the Native Americans. Many fights broke out between the Native Americans and the explorers. In fact, Ponce de Leon died due to a wound from an Indian arrowhead.
5) In this video, students visit the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve. In the reserve, they explore Fort Caroline; one of the first French settlements of the New World. The French fort was the home of French exploration, survival, religious disputes, territorial battles, and the first place of contact between American Indians and Europeans.

4. Juan Ponce de Leon Statue, St. Augustine Florida. A statue of Juan Ponce de Leon is located on the grounds of the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park in St. Augustine, Florida. Below the picture of the statue is a picture of what's imprinted on the statue.
5. This website shows maps and pictures and it provides knowledgeable information that can help introduce Juan Ponce de Leon to the students. It's also done by teenagers and it can get the children more interested in learning versus a boring lecture

The Narvaez Expedition painting – This painting is of Panfilo de Narvaez being attacked by the Indians. It was a great graphic image of how Narvaez was pushed away from the Panhandle.
